The death of Makerere University student, Emmanuel Tegu allegedly after being tortured by Police and LDU’s has left police stammering for answers.

First, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, in his initial statement, said Tegu was beaten by a mob near Lumumba Hall inside the university campus on June 27.

He explained further that police received a message from an unknown caller that a person had been beaten by a mob at the campus and officers rushed to the scene where they picked him unconscious and took him to Mulago.

Yesterday, Enanga came up with another version. He said Tegu had a mental illness and was found by a police patrol team behind the university main building with barely any clothing.

Mr Enanga said Tegu started pelting stones at the police.

“When our officers asked him what he was doing, he tried to run away from them. He became more aggressive as they tried to pursue him and started chasing them with stones. We have CCTV cameras of St Augustine Chapel showing him chasing officers with stones. The victim ran towards St Augustine church and reached Centenary Bank,” he said.

Parents of the deceased have a different version. They say, Tegu made a dying declaration to his mother. He is reported to have told his mother on his death bed that he had been brutalized by LDUS.

According to the relatives Tegu died later of multiple organ failures due to the injuries he sustained during the battering.

If this account is to be believed, was Tegu then too mad to fail to differentiate between LDU’s who are uniformed and a mob?

Moreover, Tegu was a born again Christian a fact that supports FDC’s Doreen Nyanjura’s assertion that the deceased was killed by LDUs. Nyanjura also Makerere University LC 5 Councilor doubling as Deputy Lord Mayor insists that security is responsible for the student’s death.

“Emmanuel was brutalized by the regime Local Defense Unit and Police Officers whose constitutional duty is to protect Life and Property of the People of Uganda,” she said.

According to Nyanjura, the deceased who is a son of a Police Officer was waylaid by his killers as he left a prayer session at Makerere and was walking home.

Colleagues at Makerere describe him as staunch Christian, kind and very friendly. His death has shocked many who knew him.

Students blame the Local Defence Unit for his death. “He was brutally battered by the Police and LDUs who were enforcing a curfew on June 28,” read a tweet from one Joseph Layoo Wabwire.

Tegu was laid to rest at his ancestral village on 5th July 2020.

“They are helping us with investigations into the alleged Mob action that led to the death of a third-year student from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Makerere University one Tegu,” said Onyango.

He added that the suspects, whose identities will be disclosed after interrogation, are said to have participated in the mob action that led to the death of the student.

In an issued Police statement, Onyango revealed that the operation that led to the arrest of the suspects was intelligence-led.

Police also disclosed that there are other suspects who took off after receiving information that they were being pursued by security over the murder.

However, Makerere University LC 5 Councilor, who doubles as Deputy Lord Mayor, Doreen Nyanjura, insists that security is responsible for the student’s death.
