The State Minister for Lands, Persis Namuganza has been declared winner in the Bukono NRM primaries.
This followed a Ping-Pong affair with the elections originally being cancelled due to massive irregularities. They werte however later allowed to proceed.
The win for Namuganza, a known Rebecca Kadaga nemesis did not come without a fight.
While speaking to the media after the polls were originally cancelled, Namuganza accused some top politicians from Busoga of plotting for her down fall. This was a veiled reference to the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.
Namuganza said the campaigns in Bukono constituency had been marred by incidents of violence, assault of her supporters besides voter bribery.
She said prior to the Election Day, voters had been bribed with between Shs100,000 – 200,000 at each homestead in order to elect her opponent Emmanuel Maganda.
“I have tried to inform the relevant electoral officials about what is happening here but nothing seems to be done,” she said then.
Namuganza hailed President Yoweri Museveni for intervening and halting the elections of Bukono constituency following the death of her agent, David Kayogera, a primary teacher who was beaten as he went to a polling station to monitor the elections.
