The suspension of 80 staff of Mbale School for Deaf has taken a new twist with the head teacher saying the Chairman Board of Governors is inciting the workers to take the school to court.
Yesterday, 1st November, 2020 leaders of the affected staff handed a petition to the Chairman Board, Stephen Masiga demanding payment of their last 13 months and compensation of about 900 million shillings.
Led by Bernard Wozomu, the workers want Masiga to help them and forward the petition to the district Labour office for further management.
While speaking to our reporter as they handed their petition, Wozomu one of the petitioners says that since they were suspended illegally each wants to be compensated with 6 million shillings.
He added that they were suspended illegally and their families are currently suffering since they lost their jobs.
Dickson Mwayafu and Julius Wananda also say that they are ready to seek legal redress if the labour officer fails to assist them as they want.
Stephen Masiga on his part vowed to take the petition to Mbale district labour officer such that suspended workers can get justice.
“As chairman board, I have on several occasions tried to talk to the headteacher at a personal level about the issue but she ignored me,” Masiga said.
He said the conflict is now beyond him asking the labour office to intervene.
In a new twist, Rose Nelima, the headteacher of Mbale School for the deaf blamed Masiga for inciting the conflict due to personal misunderstandings between them.
She promised to come up with a permanent solution in tomorrow’s (today’s) meeting of the board.
