Manchester United risk missing out on Mauricio Pochettino if they don’t act soon, with pressure growing on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Sportsmail understands there would be significant support from inside the United dressing room for former Tottenham boss Pochettino to take over if it is decided Solskjaer’s reign should come to an end.
Pochettino has been out of work for almost a year following his sacking at Spurs — but his appearance on Sky Sports on Monday night was a clear sign that he is now ready to return to the dugout. It is understood the Argentine has had a conversation with at least one high-profile club in recent weeks with a view to a potential return to work.
Pochettino would be a strong contender to replace Solskjaer but United will not be the only interested party. United are continuing to back Solskjaer but the prospect of missing out on Pochettino will not be lost on the Old Trafford hierarchy.
Solskjaer’s position is again under intense scrutiny following Sunday’s loss to Arsenal, which left them in 15th place in the Premier League, followed by Wednesday’s defeat by Champions League minnows Istanbul Basaksehir.
Defeat at Everton on Saturday would increase the pressure on the Norwegian ahead of the international break.
Solskjaer remains a popular figure among the playing squad, who view the United legend as a likeable character. But there are concerns over whether he is the man to turn the club’s season around.
United have enjoyed some stellar Champions League results this season, beating Paris Saint-Germain then Red Bull Leipzig 5-0. But doubts over Solskjaer’s standing as an elite coach remain.
There is also a feeling within the squad that the club would benefit from appointing a technical director to ensure there is a clear plan of action with regard to recruitment.
