Police in Luwero are holding a clergyman, Rev. David Ssekibaala, for allegedly strangling his wife Deborah Ssekibaala and later setting the body on fire. He was intercepted by neighbours as he fled the home.
He first told people that the wife had been hit by a grenade but was taken back to the scene where the wife’s body was found in her bedroom with serious burns.
The two had allegedly separated their bedrooms following a domestic misunderstanding.
The Savannah region police spokesperson, Issa Ssemwogerere, has confirmed the incident but said he was still waiting for officers at the scene of crime to avail him a full report.
The suspect is being held at Luwero police station. The police have also picked the body and taken it to the mortuary at Luwero for a postmortem.
Neighbours said Ssekibaala, who recently retired from the Church of Uganda active preaching, has been in disagreement with his wife which resulted in them living in separate bedrooms; but it is not yet clear about the cause of their misunderstandings.
Three of their children are still at home overcome by the shock but their elder sibling recently returned to the university to pursue studies.
Residents who gathered at the home were still in shock over the murder, saying they did not expect the man of God to bow to temptations to kill his wife, moreover in such a gruesome manner.
