Government is concerned that intelligence reports indicate that some of officers within the security officers are working with the opposition to undermine government.

Speaking to Resident District Commissioners (RDC’s) and security heads in greater Masaka yesterday 25th November, 2020, the Minister in charge of the Presidency, Hon. Mbayo Esther Mbulakubuza warned that government is aware of such individuals.

“We have been getting intelligence reports that some security officers are working with the opposition to undermine government. This is to warn you that we are aware and are taking steps,” Mbayo warned.

According to Mbayo, some security personnel were exposed during last week’s protests which were sparked off by the arrest of the National Unity Platform-NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu during his campaign trail in Luuka district.

The Minister wondered how security officers employed by government can work against the interests of their employer.

“If you know that you do not support government, why don’t you just resign and then be free to support activities of the opposition,” Mbayo said.

The Minister did not name the officers she accuses of working with the opposition nor single out the opposition she was referring to.

The Minister’s revelation comes as a shock to many Ugandans who believe that the current security setup in Uganda is to protect President Museveni’s interests.

Recently, a UPDF officer, Brig. Deus Mande who heads the Kasajjagirwa Masaka contingent was captured on camera, saying that the force will not surrender power to ‘amateurs’ in the opposition.
