The Legal Aid Service providers Network (LASPNET) Uganda has written to President Museveni seeking the immediate appointment of the chairperson Uganda Human Right Commission.

This follows the alarming backlog of cases at Uganda Human Rights Commission’s tribunal since the death of the chairperson, Hon. Meddi Kagwa last year.

According to Dr. Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa, the executive director LASPNET, absence of a substantive chairperson to preside over the tribunal has made it difficult for the tribunal to make certain declarations in regard to the institution’s mandate.

She said the chairperson UHRC is very critical in creating a situation where there is sanity and accountability as far as human rights protection is concerned.

Namubiru added that the chairperson also monitors human rights, makes reports to parliament, holds accountable those who abuse human rights and carry out civic Education especially during election periods among others as stipulated.
