The National Unity Platform (NUP) Party flag bearer has revealed why he has chosen to wear bullet proof attire.
While addressing thousands of his supporters at Kibuku yesterday 3rd December 2010, Robert Kyagulanyi, a.k.a Bobi Wine who was dressed in a red overall, bullet proof jacket and a helmet said there have been many attempts at his life.
“This is not my usual way of dressing, but because there have been many attempts to kill me during my campaign trail, I have decided to dress like this,” Kyagulanyi said.
On Tuesday, 1st December Bobi Wine’s car was shot at allegedly for driving through a police roadblock at Amber Courts in Jinja. Whereas Bobi Wine was not injured, his driver got rubber bullet injuries.
A day before a number of his entourage at Kayunga got gunshot injuries including the commander of his official police guards, ASP Kato and producer Magic.
Meanwhile there are reports that security is pondering a move to have Bobi Wine arrested for possessing government stores illegally.
Bullet proof jackets are security property and individuals can only acquire them upon permission from government.
At Budaka, Bobi Wine, pledged to improve the police and army welfare as well civil servants by at least starting with ShsI million per month as basic salary.
Unlike his previous chaotic campaigns, the rallies in Budaka and Kibuku were peaceful as the candidate delivered his addresses peacefully without interruptions from security.
Relatedly, the NUP leadership in Budaka has applauded security for trying to show professionalism while executing their constitutional duty.
The NUP district chairperson who doubles as the Flag bearer for NUP MP Aspirant for Budaka County, Mr Asuma Maggwa, told this website that police exercised its independent role unlike the previous days where they showed partisanism.
Musana Collins, the NUP chairperson Kibuku district said;
“I really salute the DPC Kibuku for the gesture and what happened today is a living example to other districts.” He said.
Earlier in the day many shops remained closed in the town centre as residents had remained indoors fearing that they might be caught by stray bullets or teargased.
Bob Kagarula the RPC North Bukedi said police will not block any Presidential candidate from campaigning as long as he or she adheres to the stipulated EC campaign programme and follows covid 19 SOPs.
