Why Masaba Cooperative Union Annual General Meeting Ended In Chaos

Masaba Cooperative Union Annual General Meeting yesterday, 11th December 2020 ended in chaos after it was abruptly called off.

The AGM that was taking place at Mbale secondary school was abruptly and indefinitely called off by the Mbale District Commercial Officer, Willy Joshua Wepukhulu.

According to Wepukhulu, he postponed the meeting after getting intelligence reports that delegates who support Moses Wamboko, a contestant for position of chairman board were going to fight with those of Eddy Wakholowa, the current chairman.

He explained further that, the situation required adequate security. This was however not possible because all policemen at Mbale CPS were busy guarding controversial elections of a new cultural leader at Masaba cultural institution. Whereas others had been deployed to take care of Patrick Amuriat, the FDC presidential candidate who was scheduled to hold his campaign rally in Mbale town.

Wepukhulu also said that due to the fear of conflicts and yet there was no security, he was forced to stop the meeting until the board sets new date for another meeting when security is there.

Deo Khaukha and Peter Busani both delegates from different primary societies under Masaba Cooperative Union say that they are bitter with the board and commercial officer for always stopping their meetings without any serious reason.

They added that last week, the Annual General Meeting flopped over no reason yet they have to spend their time and transport from different areas across Bugisu.

Moses Wamboko who has an interest in contesting for chairman board also accused the current board led by Wakholowa the current chairman of not wanting to hold an annual general meeting.

Wamboko claims that the current board is afraid of being thrown out by the delegates since they are working illegally because their two-year term of office ended in 2017 and they have refused to conduct elections.

He urged farmers to be calm and wait for a new date that will be communicated such that they can use that chance of throwing Wakholowa the current chairman and his board out.

Efforts to get a comment from Wakholowa were futile by press time because he declined saying he will not comment on the matter.
