Police at Serere Central Police Station have arrested and detained one of their own for allegedly shooting dead a fisherman in Omugaramba landing site.
The officer has been identified as special police constable Oluka Henry Stanley attached to Omugaramba police post.
Constable Oluka is alleged to have shot dead one Omuron Kokas, a fisherman based at Omugaramba Landing site around Lake Kyoga in Serere District on the 4th of January 2021.
The case has been opened under CRB 009/2021 and according to police spokesperson East Kyoga, David Ongom Mudong, the incident happened at around 10:00pm when the area local defence secretary notified the police of a group of people playing loud music, dancing and drinking in one of the bars around the landing site.
Ongom says, SPC Oluka immediately responded to the call armed with an SMG rifle No. UG POL 563680604-11921 and while at the scene, he was confronted by a group of people who were allegedly drunk prompting him to discharge bullets that hit Omuron through the left-hand side of the ribs killing him instantly.
He added that, shortly after the incident, the community charged towards the police post and burnt stationeries including personal belongings of the police officers attached to the post but the team from CPS Serere responded and neutralized the situation.
Ongom has condemned the unreasonable force of using live bullets by the officer against unarmed civilians.
He also condemned the act of civilians confronting police officers on duty through acts of violence and resisting Lawful orders.
Ongom also confirms the arrest of the officer to help with investigations though he is still under medical attention at Soroti regional referral hospital after getting involved in a serious accident while fleeing from the scene.
