Elgon Region Special Police Constables Cry Foul Over Non Payment

Special Police constables in the Elgon region have raised their concern over non-payment of their salaries and work overload.

 

Last month, Uganda police trained and recruited a number of Special Police Constables. At Elgon region, 2000 police polling constables to help Uganda police in curbing election violence at different polling stations.

 

Basing on the contract they signed with Uganda Police Force (UPF), the polling constables are supposed to work with the police for three months of election period. They are also supposed to receive Shs300,000 per month.

 

According to some of the SPCs who preferred anonymity, since they finished the training and recruitment last month, they have not been paid even a single coin.

 

The constables are also complaining of extra duties like patrolling at night, arresting suspects among others that were not included in the contract.

 

Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson has admitted the delayed payment but urged the constables to be calm because government is processing their payments soon.

 

He revealed also that the extra duties given to the constables is one way police will base to recruit them into mainstream Police.
