IGANGA
National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer has been declared winner of the Iganga Municipality Mayoral race.
Delix Bamugemye beat eight other contestants in the race by 4595 votes followed by the incumbent mayor, David Balaba who stood as an independent who got 2945 votes.
NRM’s Hajji Asuman Dhabasada got 2313 votes, Henry Dhikusoka independent 608, Abubaker Kisambira independent 305, while Mohamed Kafuko independent got 138 votes.
Bamugemye was declared winner of the polls by the Returning Officer Iganga District, Mercy Ataho at 3.30 a.m today amidst cheers and ululations from a handfull of supporters who braved the cold to witness the tallying process.
Bamugemye who is also the NUP coordinator for Busoga sub region while speaking to this website shortly after being declared winner promised to lobby for the renovation of road infrastructure during his term in office besides putting pressure on government to construct a modern market for traders to reduce on the congestion along streets.
“This is a municipality but one can think there are no leaders who can put things right,” he said.
He said Iganga municipality is not benefiting much from government simply because leaders who are elected sit back and instead connive with government officials to embezzle funds meant for the tax payers.
The incumbent mayor, David Balaba when contacted for a comment conceded defeat and congratulated Bamugemye for the win.
The District Police Commander (DPC) Iganga, Kenneth Muheirwe said no serious cases were reported during the voting process.
Muheirwe urged politicians to respect the outcomes of election results as one way of avoiding chaos during and after the polling process.
He said majority of politicians tend to use provocative language that causes tension amongst supporters thus chaos and bloodshed.
