A section of Bamasaaba from Kenya has asked Masaaba cultural institution to grant them with an opportunity of getting the next cultural leader [Umukuka] from their side.

Umaru Busawule Jofu, the new appointed Prime Minister of Masaaba cultural institution for Bamasaaba of Kenya says that since they are also Bamasaaba they see no reason why they can’t be considered.

He adds that according to the constitution of Masaaba cultural institution, election of the Umkhuka is rotational on a 5 year basis from three main clans of Mwambu, Mubuya and Wanale.

Jofu adds that since the current cultural leader III Umukuka John Wagbyalila is from Mwambu clan, it will only be fair if Bamasaaba of Kenya are also given an opportunity of getting the next Umukuka.

However, Geoffrey Wepondi the general sectary of Masaaba cultural institution said that request will be impossible unless the suggestion is shared by the Presidents of the two countries.

Kenya has over 6 million Bamsaaba from western district of Bungoma while Uganda has about 4 million from the six districts of Mbale, Manafwa, Bududa, Bulambuli, Sironko and Namisindwa
