The Ministry of Education has released a timetable on resumption and closing dates for all classes for this academic year ending July 24th 2021.

The time table is contained in a circular issued by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alex Kakooza, on February 9, 2021.

According to the circular; Primary 6, Senior 3, and 5 will report back on March 1, study for 14 weeks, and break off on May 21, 2021.

Primary 4 and 5 will report back on April 6 after Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), which ends on March 31, 2021, study for eight weeks, and break off on June 4, 2021. This, according to Kakooza, is to allow lower primary classes to report back and use the school facilities.

P1, P2, and P3 will report back on June 7, 2021, study for eight weeks, and close on July 24, 2021.

Senior 1 will report back on April 12, 2021, study for four weeks, and close on July 3, while S2 will report back on May 31, after senior 3 and 5 classes have broken off, study for 10 weeks, and close on July 24, 2021.

Students in technical and vocational training institutions, Primary Teachers’ Colleges (PTC) and National Teachers’ Colleges will report back on March 1, 2021, and follow a shift system to ensure strict adherence to COVID spread preventive measures.

Regarding universities, the ministry said, they shall open in a phased manner starting on March 1, 2021.

“The face to face sessions should be conducted in shifts and should be prioritized for courses and course units that require practical hands-on and laboratory work,” Kakooza said.

He said these dates can only be varied after obtaining written permission, on individual basis, from him on the recommendation of the Director Basic and Secondary Education or Director Higher, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, at the ministry.

“Please note that academic year 2020 for primary, secondary and post-primary education institutions will end in July 2021. Thereafter, a comprehensive school calendar for 2021 academic year as well as a strategy for recovery of lost time, will be issued,” he said.

He also revealed that progression to the next class will be based on attendance and continuous assessment of classwork and assignments.
