One person has died following injuries he sustained when police officers in the eastern district of Butebo shot and critically injured four people at butebo health center IV.
Andrew Onongo a resident of kanyumu was shot during an exchange between the police and the rowdy mob mostly bodabodas who wanted to burn a police patrol car blaming it for causing an accident that claimed a life of one resident last Friday.
Mr. Clement Lebbo, the Bukedi north police spokesperson confirmed the death of Onongo saying he succumbed to bullet injuries.
According to Lebbo, the police patrol car Reg. No UP 07726 was on routine work when it accidently knocked one of the residents at Kanyumu trading center at about 9pm last Friday.
He said after the accident police evacuated the victim, rushed him to the health facility but the residents later regrouped and stormed the health facility armed with machetes, slings, bow and arrow and started attacking the officers.
He said the officers fired several bullets on air but the irate members of the public persisted pelting them with stones.
Others injured and still admitted at Mbale regional referral hospital include Stephen Okia, Charles Etu, and Seperia Mugala.
He cautioned locals to refrain from barbaric acts of attacking armed officers.
