A total of two thousand six hundred fifty (2650) Local Defence Unit (LDU) Personnel have started military training at Labworodong Military Training School in Agago district. Five Hundred Nine (509) are females.

The Deputy Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 5 Infantry Division Brig Gen Stephen Mugerwa, while briefing recruits yesterday 18th October 2021 called for conscious discipline, loyalty, sacrifice, perseverance and patriotism, among other core values.

He said it is out of this realization that UPDF has succeeded in becoming a modern and professional Force.

The training, which started on October 18th 2021, will last for six months. Last month, UPDF embarked on a country wide recruitment of LDUs to augment its protection and defence capabilities.

LDU personnel were recruited from villages and taken for training to come back and serve under their communities.

They fall under the reserve force of the UPDF and hence they are directly under the command and control of the UPDF.

The LDU’s are expected to serve in their respective communities which they know very well and they will contribute to strengthening security in those areas.

LDU personnel serve under UPDF directly and therefore can give support to UPDF’s productive ventures.

“That is why we are recruiting LDUs and have qualified in artisan courses like carpentry, building and engineers, he added. “You can find an LDU driving a UPDF vehicle because they are answerable to the UPDF and the military law.” Maj. Kabona said during the closure of recruitment in Central Uganda.
