The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has distanced itself from the proposal of amending the constitution allowing Members of Parliament to elect a President.
This was raised by Richard Twodong, the NRM Party Secretary General on Saturday, 15th January 2022 during the Sironko district NRM party reconciliation meeting.
Todwong said the Party has never received such a communication officially but that they also hear about in the media.
Last week a section of former NRM MPs held a press conference and raised the proposal of wanting Parliament to amend the constitution such that the president is elected by MPs not all citizens as it has been.
He added that if the issue is presented to the Party officially, they will sit down and debate it before coming to an official stand.
Twodongo also urged Ugandans to respect people’s proposals since the NRM government brought freedom of expression rather than insulting the former legislators who came up with the proposal.
However, John Baptist Nambeshe, the MP for Manjiya County in Bududa district also National Unity Platform Deputy President says that it’s President Museveni who is behind the proposal indirectly.
He adds that Museveni on several occasions has used NRM MPs indirectly to bring his proposals and later passed for example the age limit and term removal.
Sassaga Wanzira, the MP representing Budadiri East Constituency in Sironko district on FDC ticket has urged Ugandans, religious leaders and stakeholders to wake up and condemn this proposal seriously before reaching parliament.
He adds that the constitution states that power belongs to people to elect anybody they want but not MPs electing for them.
