Residents from four villages in Bududa district are celebrating after being connected to the national electricity grid for the first time.

The villagers showed their joy yesterday’s evening 22nd February 2022 drumming and dancing to the local dance commonly known as “Kadodi”.

The four villages are Bwilimbi A, Bwilimbi B, Sikuso and Nekhoyo located in Bwilimbi parish, Bukibokolo Sub County in Bududa district.

John Walimbwa, the councilor representing elders at Bukibokolo Sub County who led the celebrations says that it’s their first time to have electricity in the area.

He adds that electricity has only been in their neighboring sub counties which has been hindering development in their area.

Godfrey Mutambo, the LCI chairperson of Bwilimbi village also says that lack of electricity in the area has been creating lots of insecurity cases like theft, gambling, rape among others after youths using advantage of darkness.

He adds that this electricity is going to give employment to youths by opening saloons, welding among others which will help to reduce insecurity and unemployment problems.

Martine Matinyu, one of the area residents also urged government to connect more rural areas such that they reduce the problem of deforestation whereby people can cook using electricity.

Moses Mukhobe, the Manjiya county MP contestant says that he is the one who lobbied this extension of electricity to the area after locals raised to him their concerns about over staying in darkness which he has fulfilled.

Mukhobe adds that he only paid 50 million shillings to UMEME for poles and wires before connecting 4 villages where over 1000 residents are going to benefit.

He urged government to reduce the price of electricity such that all people in villages can afford to connect power rather than connecting illegally which is killing Ugandan
