The long awaited reconstruction of Makerere University’s Ivory Tower is set to start.

Announcing the development yesterday 14th March 2022, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe in a tweet said the University Administration had handed over the reconstruction of the historic building to Excel Construction.

“This afternoon we have handed over the site for the reconstruction of the iconic Main Building to Excel Construction. I look forward to quality work by the Contractor on this extremely important building.” Nawangwe said in a tweet.

Last year government approved recommendations for the restoration of Makerere University main administration building which was razed by fire in September 2020.

Government committed Shs21 billion to facilitate construction works.

The mystery fire according to a report compiled in February 2020, by the Criminal Investigations Department and the Ministry of Works, was due to an electric short circuit arising from a faulty electrical system.
