MBALE CITY
Over 200 business premises in Northern city division at Mbale city were today, 28th March 2022  closed by authorities during an operation  over tax evasion.
The operation was in areas like Nkoma, and Namakweke among others.
According to Martin Busiku, the town clerk of Northern city division, most business people have refused to pay ground and property rates since the first covid19 lockdown in 2021.
He adds that most claim that they were affected by lockdown which affected their ability to raise money for taxes.
Busiku also says that they demand over 1 billion shillings from those business people saying that they expect to recover that money.
Samuel Wetaka and James Samali both affected  business people operating at Nkoma ward say that  delaying to pay taxes is not their own making but they were seriously affected by the Covid-19 lockdown .
They add that they were locked for over five months saying that it’s unfair that the city council wants them to clear all the taxes .
