Residents from twenty villages of Sisuni Sub County in Manafwa district this morning, 4th April 2022 held a peaceful demonstration over lack of clean water.
The residents say they have to walk for over 7 kilometers in order to access clean water after all their boreholes broke down.
The affected villages are Bumaena lower, Bukasama upper, Butema, Bukasawa, Buwopuwa among others all located at Sisuni parish, Sisuni Sub County in Manafwa district.
Protesting residents marched to Sisuni Sub county head offices holding placards while shouting saying they want the sub county to fix their spoiled boreholes so that they can access clean water.
Anent Kangala, one of the affected residents, says that all seven boreholes they had in the parish have dried due to recent drought and others are spoiled.
She adds that they have tried several times telling the sub county to allocate some funds for repairing the boreholes but nothing has happened up to now.
Patrick Muse, the LCI chairperson of Bumaina lower village adds that residents travel over seven kilometers to the neighboring district of Namisindwa in order to access clean water.
He adds that lack of water has resulted into domestic violence at homes where by every day he gets over ten cases at his office about men fighting with their wives over delaying to bring water.
Doreen Matembo, the area sub county councilor called for calm amongst the residents saying that they have raised the matter on the floor of council but the problem is the sub county has no money.
She urged locals to contribute money amongst themselves so that they can repair some spoiled boreholes as they wait for the sub county.
