A number of footpath bridges at the Uganda-Kenya border in Eastern Uganda have been washed away by Lwakhakha River which flooded.

The bridges include Saboti, Khabikenga and Mayanja among others. The bridges are used by pedestrians and area residents to cross to Chebukube in Kenya for business, study or farming.

Sakin Ibrahim and Aron Wabomba who are area residents say the current rains and the subsequent destruction of bridges have made it impossible for them to access their gardens in Kenya.

Boniface Kibingei Masifwa, the LC1 chairperson for Lukhendu Cell in Bumbo Town council has called for government and the local non- government organizations interventions in reconstructing the bridges.

Emma Bwayo, the Namisindwa Youth Councilor says other bridges in the District are in a poor state and need urgent attention. Bwayo cites Khamisaru and Namikhoma bridges which he claims money meant for maintenance works was misappropriated.
