MBALE CITY

Industrial City Division in Mbale city is currently struggling to get 50 million shillings to pay allowance arrears to councilors who have gone for ten months without pay.

Yesterday, 1st June 2022, a section of councilors stormed Industrial city division offices demanding their pay but were calmed down by the Speaker, Musa Kasaja.

Nuru Mwenyi, the female councilor representing Malare Ward, says that since they were elected last year, the city division has never paid them any allowance.

She adds that they are entitled to get around 200,000/= to 400,000/= per sitting basing on the volume of money they collect as division in local revenue.

Mwenyi adds that they also have their home obligations they want to fulfill like buying food, paying rent among others.

Sali Wasike, also a councilor, adds that they are disappointed that last week, a few councilors were handpicked by the Senior Assistant Town Clerk and Speaker’s office and were paid, leaving others out.

However, Musa Kasaja the speaker of the Industrial city division dismissed the allegations of paying some councilors saying that all the 54 councilors in the division have not yet been paid.

He called for calm among councilors saying that they have written to the government to expedite the process of remitting their 20% local revenue so that they can use it to pay councilors next week.
