The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robina Nabanjah has said the striking teachers have up to 30th June to report back to class or lose their jobs.
Nabanja was responding to questions on the ongoing strike in a local Kampala based Television this morning 27th June, 2022 despite the earlier threat of having the teachers sacked.
In a 22nd letter written by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Service, teachers were given up to 24th June to report back to class or be sacked.
“All government employed teachers are advised to resume duty at their respective workstations by June 24, 2022 without fail. Any government employed teacher who does not comply to this call will be regarded as having abandoned duty and resigned from the public service in accordance with Section A-n(17) of the Uganda Public service standing orders 2021,” reads part of the June 22 ministry of public service letter addressed to UNATU.
However, in what looks like a shift in goal posts, Nabanja now says teachers have up to 30th June, 2022 to return to work.
“It is their right to withdraw their service but we shall not close the schools forever. We have deployed as a country, all the teachers who are not in classes by 30th June, the CAOs should delete them and we recruit new teachers.” Nabbanja said.
