Local leaders in Sironko district are hunting for one of their own for allegedly selling government disaster relief items for people who were affected by a landside at Gibisi.
The suspect is identified as Michael Mafabi, a councilor representing Zesui parish at Masaba Sub County in Sironko district.
Last month, Member of Parliament representing Budadiri East constituency, Isaiah Sasaga Wanzira lobbied for relief items from the Ministry of Disaster and Preparedness after floods and landslides hit the area.
The ministry responded by sending 20,000kgs of maize flour and 10,000kg of beans to the affected people at Bukise and Masaba Sub County which were seriously affected by floods and the landslide during the recent heavy rains in Bugisu.
According to Deo Nabugodi, the Masaba Sub county district councilor, distribution exercise of the relief items at Masaba Sub County started this week by district and sub county leaders.
However, while speaking to our reporter this morning, Patrick Wabugo the LCIII chairperson of Masaba Sub County says that during the distribution exercise at his sub county, he was not involved but was just called later by Stephen Wamusai, the Zesui parish LCII Chairperson in the evening yesterday to arrest Mafabi.
Wabugo says Mafabi sold 150kgs of maize flour and 100kgs of beans meant for disaster affected people of Gibisi parish to nearby shops.
Wamusai adds that by the time they wanted to arrest him, he had taken off up to now. He reveals further that all sold relief items were recovered and are now with sub county leaders.
The LCIII Chairperson confirmed that the hunt is ongoing vowing that once they sight Mafabi anywhere, he will be arrested and handed to police.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Sasaga has condemned what Mafabi did rather than being an example as a leader.
He warned other leaders against abusing government relief items which they are distributing warning that the law will catch up with the culprits.
