Most Primary School teachers in Soroti district have no accommodation in the schools they teach forcing many to sleep in classrooms.
This was revealed during a meeting between the District Woman Member of Parliament, Anna Adeke Ebaju and Parents, Teachers of Abango Primary School, in Ocokican Sub County, Soroti district yesterday.
John Ekocu, the deputy head teacher Abango primary school, said that some teachers have resorted to staying in classrooms because of shortage of staff accommodation.
Beatrice Francis Ikwap, the head teacher of Ojama primary school, Katine sub-county said that the school has 11 teachers but only five are accommodated.
She said the situation has forced them to rent in distant areas, hence delaying their arrival at school to teach learners.
“Due to lack of accommodation in school, our teachers can’t teach up to late hours since they travel from far distances and this is most likely to affect the UPE results,” Ikwap added.
It’s upon that background Ebaju donated 10 iron sheets to each of the above-mentioned schools for the roofing of the teacher’s houses built by the parents.
“I have taken an initiative of supporting schools in my district by buying them iron sheets and other building materials so as to help improve the standard of education” Adeke said.
Some of the locals that spoke to this website commended the Member of Parliament for supporting the education of their children.
They called on the government through the ministry of education and sports to consider the plight of primary schools in Soroti and the whole country by building better accommodation for teachers.
“As parents we feel so bad seeing teachers sleeping in classroom blocks meant for learning and that is the reason we started the initiative of constructing the accommodation for our teachers, but we are grateful to our district woman member of parliament who has come in to support us with iron sheets.” Locals said.
