At least 11 people have been confirmed dead and six others are in a critical condition after a dormitory caught fire at a school for visually impaired children in Mukono.

The fire is said to have burnt the dormitory early this morning, Tuesday, 25th October 2022 at around 1:00am.

This was confirmed by Luke Owosigire, the KMP Spokesperson.

“The Police at Mukono are investigating a fire outbreak that took place today at about 1am at SALAMA School for the Blind in Luga Village, Ntanzi parish, Ntejeru Kisoga town council in Mukono district,” Owosigire said.

He also said that whereas the cause of the fire is currently unknown, there are so far 11 deaths as a result of the fire while 6 are in critical conditions and admitted at Herona Hospital in Kisoga .

School fires are common in Uganda, sometimes started from children lighting candles in their dormitories after lights out.

Managing the fire is in many cases hampered by overcrowding in the school children’s sleeping areas.
