Uganda Revenue Authority has arrested a fraudster with forged Digital Tax Stamps and counterfeit Ambience waragi in Nansana, Kampala.

This was revealed by the commissioner General of URA today 13th February where he says the arrest followed an intelligence operation led by URA against businesses suspected of forging tax stamps on gazetted products.

โ€œOur Tax Investigations team got information that a one Bulegeya Joshua of Nansana was not only operating an unregistered business — but was also manufacturing counterfeit Ambiance Waragi Gin with forged tax stamps,โ€Musinguzi said.

He says, Mr Bulegeya Joshuaโ€™s area of operation was mainly Nansana and other surrounding towns where he sold counterfeit Ambiance Waragi — until his fateful day when he was arrested by a joint intelligence team of URA and the Police last week.

โ€œThe alert on the tax fraud scheme was as a result of complaints filed to Uganda Police by Mr. Kiyimba Joseph, the Managing Director of Ambiance Distillers Ltd.โ€ ย Mr Denis Kugonza – Commissioner Tax Investigations, URA.

In order to determine whether the Digital Tax Stamps were genuine or not, URA submitted the seized samples to the Science Laboratory for forensic examination.

โ€œAs suspected, the results indicated that the tax stamps were forged and the products were counterfeit,โ€ URA says.
