TRAGIC! Butaleja School Wall Collapses on Pupils, Killing Two

By Ayub Kirinya

Two pupils of Golden Heart nursery and primary school in Busabi Sub County in Butaleja district have been killed following the collapse of a dilapidated classroom block.

The wall collapsed yesterday, Monday, 13th March, 2023 at about 4:00PM as a group of pupils were trying to pull it down.

The wall also injured three other pupils who were allegedly demolishing the structure whose roof was blown off by heavy winds last week.

One of the deceased pupils has been identified as Maholo Innocent, a P.3, those hospitalised include Mwima Abdalla aged 14, Were Joshua aged 7, Kezia Nyafone, 14 and Wagwabi Alex aged 15. One of these three died at the hospital while receiving medication.

According to the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Butaleja, Nkoko Rachael, one of the pupils died on spot while the other died at Busolwe General Hospital in critical condition. She said the director of the school, Owor Boniface has been arrested and detained at the Butaleja District Central Police Station.

She warned that the private schools that operate in dilapidated structures put the lives of learners at stake.

“We are going to carry out serious operations against such private schools with no good facilities and get rid of the schools which risk our children’s lives”.

Parents of the school wondered why the school administrators would use learners to pull down the structure which was in a sorry state rather than hiring casual laborers for the same.

“This school should be closed because it is in a bad state” Mubala Eriasa, one of the parents, said.

Nelson Weere, a parent whose son died said after the incident, the teachers and the school administrators fled the school and left the learners without any help only to be rescued by the school neighbors.

“It is very unfortunate that the teachers tasked the children to demolish a building which would otherwise be demolished by casual laborers, after the incident, the teachers fled the school and left the children to die.” Weere said.

Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident and said that there was negligence by the school administrators leading to an incident that resulted into death.

“It is true, the incident happened and there was negligence from the school administrators who asked the pupils to push down the dilapidated building which resulted to death” he said, adding that the director of the school is under police custody.
