MALABA
Business at the border town of Malaba, in Tororo district was today, 16th May,2023 paralyzed after truck drivers and clearing agents downed their tools.
The truck drivers were protesting a decision by the Ugandan government to block empty cargo trucks returning to Kenya from passing through the Malaba border.
The empty trucks, according to a policy of the Ugandan government, are to pass through the Lwakhakha border; a development drivers say is expensive and time consuming for them.
According to a clearing agent at Malaba entry point who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity, there have been a lot of delays especially when clearing luggage and empty vehicles and the drivers believe that these delays are caused by the leaders of both Kenya Revenue Authority and Uganda Revenue Authority for their own benefit.
She added that there is no need of scanning an empty car and waiting for the answers from Nairobi when there is a police officer who can check it and confirm there and then.
By the time of filling this story, security personnel on the Uganda side were still persuading the drivers to denounce their strike in vain.
