BUSIA
The government of Uganda is set to establish a new entry point at the border with Kenya in Busia district, according to the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.
Hon. Kadaga, made the revelations on 18/5/2023, at the belated women’s day celebrations held at Butenge primary school playground in Lunyo Sub County, Busia district where she was guest of honor.
Several leaders, among them area MPs from other districts, religious leaders and cultural leaders graced the event that was disrupted by heavy downpour.
In her communication, she disclosed that her ministry will table the issue of creating more Border posts in Busia in addition to the current Busia One post Border with the aim of reducing congestion of trucks, adding that she has also written to the Secretary General of the East African community to put it into consideration.
The minister also assured the gathering about government’s commitment on solving the road network in the district and gave an example of some roads and infrastructure that are currently under consideration including one in Mulanda where government is set to construct a bridge that will connect both countries and another at Mugura village in Buteba sub-county.
She said these will not only solve the problem of the road network, but will also be vital in expanding trade in the East African nations.
On his part however, Geoffrey Odero, the MP Samia-Bugwe South requested the government through Hon. Kadaga to revive Majanji Port which connects to Mwanza port by ferry. This, according to him, will help boost business and create more employment for the citizens.
He also wants the government to rehabilitate the Majanji fish factory located along the shores of Lake Victoria which was abandoned 13 years ago by an investor.
In response, Hon. Kadaga said that she will be making another visit to Busia district to implement all other government programs as requested by the area leaders.
