BUSIA

A 17-year old teenager has been lynched by an angry mob on allegations that he hacked his own mother to death over a piece of land.

The deceased has been identified as Robert Wejuli, a resident of Mawero B village, Alupe Parish, Buteba Sub County in Busia district who according to residents killed his 39-year old mother Mrs. Belvin Nanjala, yesterday 24th May, 2023.

Area residents told this reporter that it all started early in the morning (24/5/2023), when Wejuli was asked by his mother to get a hoe and escort her to the garden. The boy instead grabbed a machete from the house and slit his mother by the throat without saying anything.

After cutting his mother using a machete, neighbours who heard her scream responded to the alarm, they found the boy trying to run but they overpowered him and also lynched him instantly.

Saidi Wandera, another resident disclosed that Wejuli has been known by everybody in the community as a marijuana smoker and sometimes disappears from home and resides in unknown places.

Moses Okitwi, a resident of Mawero B village revealed that the boy has on several occasions been attacking the mother on accusation of denying him the right to sell a piece of land. He suspects that this might have been the same issue that fueled their misunderstanding yesterday.

Jessica Nabachwa, a mother and resident of the same village says that it’s better for children to respect their mothers adding that they struggle a lot to bring up these children and it’s unfortunate to see a child killing its own parent.

On his part, Grace Kanuna, the Deputy Resident Commissioner- Busia, confirmed the double murder involving a son and a mother.

He, however, condemned the act of the community of taking the law into their hands which he says makes it very hard for the security team to make a transparent investigation.

He has also warned the youth to desist from drug abuse.

The bodies of the deceased people have been taken to Masafu General Hospital Mortuary.
