In an operation led by Didas Byaruhanga, the district police commander, the suspected car thieves were netted on 5th June, 2023 at Katanga Arubaine Village in Busia town.
Byaruhanga says security responded to a tipoff from its intelligence about shops dealing in stolen car spare parts like tyres, engines, and others at a cheap price.
Didas Byaruhanga, said that during the operation, police also recovered four stolen cars which include; a Toyota select saloon car registration number UAH 358P, a Toyota Hilux pick up car UAH 158K, and a numberless silvery Toyota progress car.
Michael Kibwika, the Resident District Commissioner-Busia, told our reporter yesterday, (6/6/2023) that the arrested suspects (names withheld) are currently detained at Busia Central Police Station as investigations to net their colleagues at large continue.
He said that the suspects steal these cars from people’s homes, parking yards, garages, and sometimes waylay owners and rob them. He says most of the cars are stolen from Mbale, Soroti, Mbarara, Kampala, Kenya, and DR Congo.
He added that the suspects are part of a notorious gang of car robbers who operate in different parts of Uganda and use Busia as the main destination of assembling and transporting stolen cars from Uganda to neighboring Kenya.
