Residents of Bumasikye Sub County in Mbale district have asked government to take over Professor Wamukota Memorial Hospital.
Professor Wamukota memorial hospital is located at Lwaboba Upper Village, Lwabooba parish, Bumasikye Sub County in Mbale district and was founded in the 1980s by Professor Wamukota, the first doctor from Bugisu region during colonial rule.
While speaking to the media on Monday, 12th June, 2023, James Wamukoto, cousin to the late Professor Wamukota said that before the death of the doctor in 2005, he had established a private hospital in the area to serve his people from two sub-counties of Bumasikye, Busiu at Mbale district and neighboring Tororo district.
He adds that since he died in 2005, the health center is struggling with lots of challenges like few health workers, no drugs, and the buildings are dilapidated with no repairs among others due to lack of money.
Sam Welikhe, Wamukota’s grandson also says that the late Wamukota used to fund the hospital as a person but since he died nobody has come out to rescue the hospital.
He asked the government to take over the health center such that it can repair the buildings, and employ more health workers among others to improve services.
Fein Kituyi, the administrator at the hospital says that the facility receives over fifty patients daily who can’t be handled by only six health workers.
