The Kaliro district Local government Chief Administrative Officer, (CAO), his Principal Human Resource Officer and Senior Accountant have been arrested by Inspector General of Government over allegations of embezzlement.
The trio that includes, Godfrey Mutome (CAO), Rebecca Kagwala (PHRO) and John Wabwire, the Senior Accountant were all arrested yesterday, Thursday, 22nd June, 2023. Mutome and Kwagala were picked from Kaliro whereas Wabwire was picked from Kampala where he now works as Senior Accountant in the Ministry of Finance. He was formerly with Kaliro district before moving to Ministry of Finance.
The trio was arrested by the Inspectorate of Government team commanded by Fredrick Okectch, the IGG Jinja Regional Officer.
Speaking to the press, Oketch says they received a complaint that officials of Kaliro district local government had embezzled funds meant for staff salaries and pension.
“So we commenced investigation a year ago and established that Shs5, 086,767 billion had been embezzled,” Oketch said.
He says the trio created their own Sacco Account where they deposited money picked from the district’s salary account with the impression that the monies were loan deductions whereas not.
He said the suspects will be arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of embezzlement, causing financial loss to government and money laundering which activities are contrary to Section 19 of the Anti-Corruption Act 2009.
