By Agencies

Ghana Parliament has passed a proposed amendment to the anti-gay bill that make identifying as LGBT punishable by a three prison sentence.

The bill will also have people who campaign for LGBT rights facing up to 10 years in jail.

The amendments were backed by MPs across all Political Parties but will be scrutinized again before becoming law.

One female MP who dissented was heckled into submission.

Gay sex is already illegal in Ghana. The proposed legislation has faced condemnation from abroad with critics saying it infringes on rights guaranteed by the Ghana constitution.

Meanwhile, majority of Ghanaians who support the legislation argue that this will protect their values.

This legislation follows a similar oneĀ  passed by Uganda Parliament and signed into law by President Museveni despite threats by the West.
