Government to Digitalize Local Government Tax Collection

The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is to digitalise tax collection at local government levels.

 

This was revealed on Monday 25th September 2023 by Maris Wangera, the acting director of debt and cash police at the Ministry of Finance who presented Matiya Kasaja.

 

This was during the eastern region local government consultative budget conference 2024/ 2025 at Mount Elgon Hotel.

 

According to Wangera, government has been losing billions of money due to a local way of collecting money that some government officers used to embezzle as others under declare.

 

She adds that government started collecting tax digitally at the national level but next financial year they want to roll out the same system to local government units.

 

David Mukhwana, the programs manager Kapchorwa Civil Society Organization Alliance, said that the government should reduce luxurious expenditure like facilitating government officials to go abroad for meetings among others.

 

He says that money can be diverted to help the government run its work such that taxpayers can gain.

 

Jean Bageya, heading planning at the local government finance commission welcomed the idea of the government digitalizing tax collection at local government saying this is going to boost local revenue collection.

 

She urged local government staff to embrace this system such that the tax collection base can be increased for the development of this country.
