Two minors have been confirmed dead by drowning in the Kampala floods in two different incidents following a heavy downpour yesterday, 16th October 2023.
According to a statement issued by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police today 17th October 2023, the first incident happened in Kirombe, Butabiika while the second occurred at Nansana Division.
At Kirombe in Butabika, a 7 year old Amanya John Baptist, a 7-year-old pupil at St. James Biina Primary School drowned at about 4:00pm after falling into a fast-running water channel that swiftly carried him away.
Amanya John Baptist was son of Sevimbi John Mary, a resident of Kirombe, Butabiika.
The body of the minor was later recovered from Kirombe zone B, Butabiika.
“Upon receiving the report, the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and Homicide team visited the scene, and the young boy’s body was conveyed to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination,” Owoyesigyire says.
The second incident that also happened yesterday 16th October occurred at Nansana Division where a one Mukisa Favour, a child, lost her life tragically.
Owoyesigyire says that according to the mother of Mukisa, Nabukenya Halima, after the rainfall, her daughter requested to play with other children. When she followed shortly after, she could not locate her daughter.
“A search revealed that the child had been seen heading towards a water channel, and it was later discovered that she had drowned,” Owoyesigyire says.
The Nansana Police opened a case file, visited the scene at Katooke A zone, recorded statements from the reporter and witnesses, and subsequently conveyed the body to City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
According to the mother, Mukisa had initially requested to play with other children across the water channel, but the unfortunate incident unfolded, resulting in the loss of her life. Bystanders discovered the body and promptly contacted the police.
