The local leadership in Nyondo sub county, Mbale district has raised concern over the safety of meat consumed by the public after a revelation that most of it is from stolen cows.
The Nyondo sub county LC 3 chairperson, Mr Richard Mukyelure explained that as the Christmas Season approaches, a lot of animals like cattle, goats and sheep will be stolen.
He said within last month alone, more than seven animals got stolen from residents in different villages in the area.
“While some of the animals are taken out of the sub county, several others are slaughtered and the meat sold to the unsuspecting public,” Mr Mukyelure said in an interview with this reporter on Tuesday, 17th October 2023.
He said they are worried about the fate of his people that buy cheap animal products, including beef from unauthorized meat suppliers and butcheries.
For instance on 17 October 2023, local residents discovered a slaughtered cow of Mr Stephen Wamalero in a nearby village of Shiruri in Bumbobi Sub County.
“This is the meat that finds its way to the restaurants and roasted meat on the roadside markets, among many areas,” he said.
“We demand that the different security agencies led by the Uganda police investigate and bring to an end the animal theft that does not only threaten the meat safety but also people’s livelihoods,” he said.
