Mbale District Education authorities have explained the reason behind increased absenteeism of teachers and pupils in hard to reach sub counties in Mbale district.
Speaking at the budget conference held at Mbale district Lukhobo hall on Tuesday 31st October, 2023, Lydia Musunga, the Mbale District Education Officer said the vice was perpetrated by poor roads.
According to Musungu, schools in hard to reach sub counties like Busano, Bufumbo, Wabale and Bubyangu are registering high cases of absenteeism of pupils and teachers.
She adds that all roads leading to these schools are in dilapidated state which can’t allow them to go to school regularly especially when it is raining.
Musungu says absenteeism of teachers and pupils is going to result into poor performance at this year’s primary leaving examination.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Mafabi, the Mbale district LCV chairperson revealed that the district has got biometric machines which they are going to Install at all government institutions in the district to solve the problem of absenteeism of staff.
He adds that the central government gave all districts one billion shillings for roads and Mbale has already received 500 million which they are going to use in rehabilitating all roads in bad conditions especially of hard to reach areas.
