Over 30 Households living in a wetland located at Walufumbe village, Kyanja parish, Nakawa Division have been evicted in a massive NEMA led operation on Friday 17th November, 2023.

The joint operation that was conducted by NEMA, KCCA and police is aimed at the restoration of the degraded wetland. The operation was commanded, by NEMA’s Maj. Joshua Karamagi.
According to Major Karamagi, the operation followed issuance of restoration orders and serving of notices to vacate the area in September 2023 that was witnessed by the area LC1 chairperson.
Karamagi said the restoration order had given the encroachers 21 days to vacate the wetland but they remained adamant prompting NEMA to swing into action nearly three months later.
The restored area was estimated to be 20 acres and comprised of about 30 households, crop fields & brick making sites.
The degraded and encroached land is also part of the KCCA Agricultural Resource centre.
“The area will need routine surveillance to monitor resettlement and further encroachment. Fencing of the area will be considered,” Maj. Karamagi says.
Meanwhile, while speaking to the press, Maj. Karamagi said NEMA will hand over the restored wetland to KCCA to ensure that it will not be encroached on again. He also warned the general population not to re-encroach the wetland saying they (NEMA) will come back again and destroy whatever they will have put up.
