Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Enforcement team has intercepted two Elf trucks loaded with smuggled Kenyan Wheat and Sugar.
According to a press statement dated today, 20th November, 2023 by the Tax body, the two trucks were intercepted on Friday, 17th and Saturday 18th November, 2023.
It is alleged that on Friday, the Mbale Enforcement team gathered intelligence in Bukwo and Suam River that a notorious smuggler of wheat flour had intentions of delivering the smuggled wheat to Budadiri.
“The intel indicated the smuggler’s intention to deliver smuggled wheat to Budadiri on Friday night past midnight. Little did he know that the enforcement team subscribes to “Team No Sleep,” the statement reads in part.
The smuggler allegedly began his journey by deploying a Toyota Probox as his lead car and several boda bodas to do reconnaissance on the official enforcement team’s vehicles.
“As soon as the Isuzu UBL 193F entered the Narugugu junction, enforcement intercepted it,” says the statement.
The next day, a Bukwo-based smuggler was nabbed amid a heavy downpour. The motor vehicle UBG 384 F had to be towed by a breakdown to the Mbale tactical base.
A verification operation revealed 200 Cartons of 12 pieces (24kgs each) of pembe wheat flour batch no 31423ll C OO KENYA EXP 10.05.2024.
The second vehicle had 150 Cartons of 12 pieces (24kgs each) Of Pembe Wheat Flour Batch No 29023LL C OO KENYA EXP 17.04.2024 and 35 bags of 50kg sugar branded Star Sugar Coo Kenya.
Offence Management awaits the owners of this contraband and the vehicles meanwhile both vehicles are still parked at Mbale URA tactical center.
