Over 150 girls under 18 years of age from different sub counties in Sironko district who got pregnant during COVID-19 period on Monday successfully graduated after getting skills in different vocational training courses.
Some of these girls were given bursaries by Isaiah Sasaga Wanzira, Member of Parliament representing Budadiri East constituency in Sironko district and some were sponsored by their parents at St Catherine vocational school.
Umar Kiswiriri, Qualifications officer at directorate of industrial training at UBTEB, in the Ministry of Education and Sports who was chief guest urged parents to encourage their children to go for vocational courses.
He adds that government can’t manage to employ all youths but it can invite investors who can open factories to employ these youths or it can give them capital through its programs like PDM among others to start their own work.
Wanzira says that currently the country is facing challenges of unemployment because 99% want white collar jobs which are few.
He says that government should start constructing more vocational schools and equip those few it has such that more youths can be attracted to join.
Sasaga urged those mothers after graduation to start groups pledging to support each group with 500,000/= .
Evelyn Nafula, councilor representing Kama town council in Sironko district and a parent urged his fellow parents to encourage their children to do vocational courses.
