KABERAMAIDO
The police in Kaberamaido District have apprehended a court clerk attached to the Kaberamaido Grade One magistrate’s court for alleged theft of court exhibits.
Alex Eluka, a resident of Dokolo district was arrested on Saturday, 6th January, 2024 after a long investigation that started in May, 2023.
The arrest follows allegations of breaking into a storage facility and stealing exhibits in May last year. Detective used a smartphone from one of the exhibits they had stolen to track him.
David Otabong, the DPC Kaberamaido District, confirmed the arrest and provided details on the items stolen. He said that Eluka was arrested in Akaidebe cell in Dokolo Town council on the night of Saturday.
It’s alleged that Eluka picked a pick up vehicle on May 7th 2023 in company of five others with one carrying a gun and drove directly to the court premises having learnt that the police officers who used to keep the place were all not on duty.
After robbing the place, he later went to police and reported that the stores had been broken into and yet it’s only him and the magistrate who keep the key to the stores.
Police then started the investigation into the matter not until November last year when one of the boys Eluka used, sold the phone he was given out of the stolen exhibits. The phone was tracked and hence brought the real suspects.
Eluka, was taken into custody on Saturday and is accused of pilfering items from a storage facility that housed various exhibits.
The stolen items include a motorcycle, smartphones, and fuel containers, among other items that are yet to be documented.
The arrest underscores the significance of maintaining the integrity of court exhibits and the need for diligence in securing such evidence.
The investigation into the theft is ongoing, and authorities are working to assess the full extent of the stolen items. Eluka was meant to appear in grade two magistrate court in Kaberamaido on Tuesday.
