Uganda Revenue Authority has arrested a former Kenyan Minister over allegations of gold smuggling.
Stephen Kipkiyeny Tarus, former Assistant Minister of Internal Affairs under President Mwai Kibaki is currently languishing in Luzira Prisons where he has been remanded till 18th January, 2024.
The Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday, 10th January, 2024 presided over by Her Worship, Esther Asiimwe remanded Tarus over falsification of export documents potentially causing tax revenue to the government of Uganda to the tune Shs52Bn a year.
Tarus was allegedly arrested with 13Kgs of smuggled gold which could have cost the government Shs113M in revenue.
Tarus Stephen Kipkiyeny was caught with falsified URA customs documents contrary to Section 203 (b) of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004 as amended. On conviction, he faces up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to USD 10,000.
