The National Drug Authority has revealed that there are two foot and mouth disease vaccines being sold to unsuspecting farmers in Uganda.

“Please note that our post-market surveillance has found on market two fake Foot and Mouth Disease vaccines. As our enforcement team works closely with other authorities to cleanse the market, the public is hereby notified,” says NDA.

The two vaccines are Purified FMD FOTIVAX Foot & Mouth Disease Inactivated Vaccine and National Veterinary Institute Foot & Mouth Disease Broad Spectrum Vaccine.

In a press statement dated 7th February, 2024, NDA says the two vaccines which are already in the market have not been approved by NDA .

“We remind the public that the FMD Vaccines are solely procured and imported by government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries,” reads the statement in part.

Over 36 districts have been affected by the disease with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) lately imposing animal quarantine in Kumi and Bukedea districts following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
