Masaba Cooperative Union’s leadership is on the spot for allegedly selling the Union’s plot of land located at Senior Quarters opposite Thatch Gardens in Industrial City Division in Mbale City illegally.
Masaba Cooperative Union’s leadership under the Chairperson, Eddy Wakholowa sold the said plot of land last year at Shs200M.
Masaba Cooperative Union is a cotton farmers’ union based in Bugisu Sub region.
This has angered a section of members of the Union led by Richard Welikhe who have tasked the board to explain where over Shs200million went and who permitted them to sell that plot of land.
However, Eddy Wakholowa, the chairperson of Masaba cooperative Union (MCU) has confirmed that the Union sold the plot following legal channels.
He revealed this while speaking to our reporter today, Wednesday, 28th February, 2024 at his office, saying the board raised the proposal of selling that plot during the Annual General Meeting last year and farmers permitted the board to sell it off and divert the money into the union activities.
He says the money was used to support some primary societies in terms of renovations and supporting farmer’s SACCOs from different primary societies.
Wakholowa also says that some of those farmers complaining refused to attend the general annual meeting simply because they don’t agree with the current leadership, while others were denied entry into the meeting because they were illegal delegates.
He urged farmers to desist from being diverted by few farmers who have their hidden personal reasons of fighting the current leadership.
When contacted, Richard Welikhe insists the Shs200M was just misused by the board.
He says that during the Annual General Meeting, the board selected a few delegates who were pro him who were invited leaving out the majority.
Welikhe threatened that they are going to use all legal avenues to reclaim the union land and other assets which have been sold under the leadership of current board.
