A police officer is on the run after accidentally shooting a colleague who later succumbed to the injuries sustained.
According to the PRO Ssezibwa region, Hellen Butoto, the tragic incident occurred at 8:00pm on Saturday night at Yogi Factory in Malindi Cell, Wakisi Division, Njeru Municipality.
Butoto says the suspect is Cpl Okot Selestine, 50 years old attached to Bujagali FFU detach and resident of Bujagali detach Wakisi Division, Buikwe district while the deceased is PC Mugobera Richard aged 45 years and resident of same area.
She says that at around 8:15PM, the deceased was deployed at Yogi Factory together with the suspect and two other police officers to provide security.
That on arrival at the main gate, they found when a private security guard identified as Okello Jasper who was on duty during day had arrested a worker with gauze rolls suspected to be stolen.
She says that Cpl Okoth wanted to take over the arrested suspect of gauze which the security guard resisted. The two picked a quarrel and the deceased came in to talk to the colleague to stop quarreling.
However, Okoth who had placed his gun on table moved behind, picked his gun wanting to shoot the security guard but unfortunately he shot the deceased in the left thigh. Okoth then fled the scene with his gun no. UGPol 565910105-38982
The deceased was rushed to Jinja referral hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Efforts to arrest the suspect and recover the weapon/gun are ongoing and a case of murder opened up under Njeru CRB;240/24.
