SIRONKO: Rolling Stones Destroy Metallic Ladders Cutting Off 4 Sub Counties

SIRONKO

Continuous heavy rains pounding Sironko district have caused rolling stones to destroy the only main metallic ladders which connect four hard to reach Sub Counties.

The affected Sub counties are Butandinga, Buchabo, Bugitimwa and Butandinga Town Council.

Sigwa metallic ladders were installed by Ministry of Works and Transport in 2019 to help people from three hard to reach Sub counties access the downer part of the district.

While speaking to our reporter on phone on Sunday, 22nd April, 2024, Ezekiel Nabubolo, the LC3 chairperson of Butandinga Sub County said that the rolling rocks came as a result of landslide which hit the area during a heavy downpour that afternoon.

He says that the rocks with stones came with force sweeping off the ladders to low lying areas.

Nabubolo adds that people from upper Sironko in hard to reach areas can’t cross to downer areas to access schools, health centers, markets among others services.

The LC3 urged government to respond immediately and replace the ladders since it’s the only means of transport since the area is too hilly with steep cliffs whereby a road can’t be constructed.

However, Isaiah Sasaga Wanzira, Member of Parliament representing Budadiri East constituency in Sironko district says that he has instructed the local leaders to compile a report and submit it to the district disaster management team before handing over to him then he will present it on the Floor of Parliament.

He urged people to remain calm and not risk using the same place for crossing as he tables the problem on the Floor of Parliament and the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness for quick response.

The landslides also destroyed crops like coffee, maize, bananas among others in villages like Maluku village, Jewa,  Gaboji, Gidega, Jew, Naludoyi, and Zebu village among others in Butandinga Sub County.
