SERERE
Serere district councilors together with a section of locals today Wednesday, 24th April, 2024 held a peaceful demonstration against what they termed as failure by district technocrats to implement the March 27/2014 council resolutions on tax collection along the district roads.
On March 27/2014 council suspended all checkpoints including Abuket check point, Atiira check point among others over non remittance of money to the district local government.
According to Simon Chamute, a councilor representing Ocaapa town council, the money they have been collecting has been ending up in the pockets of a few technocrats.
Lawrence Obuku and Robert Odong traders in the area say that they are charged between Shs2,000 to Shs5,000 per day while crossing with their vehicles which they say is too high.
Henry Opio, the Serere district speaker welcomed the demonstration saying this will help to check those technocrats in office.
He adds that it’s bad for district technical staff to dishonor council resolution of stopping the collections.
However, Brain Muzasisi, the DPC of Serere blocked the demonstrators with placards from accessing district offices.
Emmanuel Okot, the RDC of Serere warned any technical staff who will be found collecting tax that the law will work on him or her until two sides harmonize.
